![]() | Finding The Right Tile For Your Charlotte Home. TEN EASY STEPS FOR CHOOSING THE RIGHT TILE FLOOR FOR THE RIGHT TILE PROJECT STEP 1: DEFINING YOUR TILE FLOORING PROJECT. Which rooms in your home need tile-the entry, family room, kitchen, bedroom or bathroom? Tile has some definite advantages over other flooring options. It's durable, easy-to-clean and hygienic. Tile flooring is also afordable, versatile and heat-resistant, which makes it a perfect choice for fireplaces and kitchen countertops. Tile floors offer a wide assortment of styles- sure to suit any personality and complement the decor of any room. STEP 2: THE PERFECT TILE FLOOR COLOR. To begin, consider the largest areas of color already in your home- walls, furniture and cabinetry. Matching your tile floor and wall color can be a wise choice if you have other dramatic contrasting features in a room such as a brightly-colored sofa or dark stained cabinets. In most instances contrasting your tile floors and walls (one light and the other dark) will create the most visual impact. For a more subtle look, keep colors in the same family, for instace a light beige wall and a rich brown floor tile. STEP 3: WHAT IS TILE SHADE VARIATION? The overall appearance of your tile installation can differ based on the amount of shade variation in the product you select. Tile shade variation is the amount of color and tonal change within each tile and between multiple tiles. There are four tile shade variation classifications: Low (V1), Moderate (V2), High (V3) and Randowm (V4). A certain degree fo shade variation is inherent in all fired products. While samples provide assistance in choosing your tile product, final selection should be made and confirmed from usual tiles and trim prior to installation. For optimal results, prior to installation lay out tile, blending multiple cartons and rearrange until they are visually appealing. STEP 4: FLOOR TILE AND WALL TILE: Be sure to look for Tile products that have Floor and Wall contributions when you want to apply tile to both surfaces and you'll find products with more available size and trim options. STEP 5: LARGE OR SMALL TILE? Tile is offered in more sizes than ever before, from 20" x 20" to 2" x 2" Mosaic Tile. Smaller tile will take longer to lay and grout. Larger format floor tile (18" x 18" or larger) has become a popular trendsetting look, but will require a larger saw, especially when cutting from corner to corner for a Diamond Patter. It all depends on your room and the look you are trying to achieve. STEP 6: CHOOSING A TILE. It's important to consider which type of tile will work best for each room in your home. see below for the most common types. Glazed Ceramic Tile. These products are coated with glass-forming material and ceramic stains that are fired at very high tempueratures to fuse the glaze to the ceramic body. The glazing process allows the tile to achieve the look of stone, marble, slate and other visuals. Glazed Porcelain Tile. Made similar to Glazed Ceramic with regard to the glass-forming minierals and ceramic stains. The diffrence is the porcelain body , which has <0.5% water absorption. Procelain body products are suitable for covered exterior applications in areas with exposure to freeze/thaw cycles. Colorbody Porcelain Tile. The densest of all types. Colorbody Porcelain has a color-through body and <0.5% water absorption. It can withstand temperature extremes, heavy foot traffic, and can be used in residential/ commercial interior or exterior applications. Industry established testing procedures result in rating/values regarding the performance of each tile series and recommended areas of use. This ensures that your tile selection meets your performance expectations for it's intended installation area. STEP 7: PICKING A TILE PATTERN. The best way to customize the look of yoru tile is to create a pattern. three things to consider when choosing a pattern: tile sizes, overall space adn installation cost. A multi-size pattern means your'll need to choose a product that includes all the sizes necessary. Larger patterns will require larger spaces, if there isn't enough room to repeat a pattern four to five times, then either the pattern or the tile used should be smaller. STEP 8: ADDING DECORATIVE TILE. Decorative Tile provides endless possibilities and includes Border, Corner/Inserts and Accent Strips. STEP 9: USING TRIM PIECES. Coordinating trim pieces enable you to complete your installation with an upscale and professional finish. Most tile series feature a standard surface bullnose, others expand into decorative trims, contoured rails and caps, and rounded corner pieces. Make sure your ceramic retailer suggests trim for any installation that has an exposed tile edge. STEP 10: GROUT COLOR AND WIDTH. Choose a similar color to make your grout joints visually disappear or a contrasting color to have each tile stand out. Wider grout joints have a more rustic look, while tighter grout joints feel more refined. Remember to seal joints after installation. | ||||||||
